went to wal-mart
by Rob on Jul.31, 2009, under Kitchen Table
went to Wal-Mart.
there was a band in the parking lot.
must be a WV thing.
i heard this cool obnoxious punky beat.
i called craig.
hey, you know this beat?
i commenced singing a drum beat into the phone.
after a while you actually get used to singing parts into the phone.
craig goes – oh yeah that’s the beat the kids play when they can’t play it the real way [paraphrase].
go to home depot.
no pumps for little fake ponds at home-depot OR wal mart.
back to wal-mart.
the band plays on…
now i’m hearing that beat in my head along with a little melody.
enter wal mart.
buy a bike for tori.
lose jack while we are in the check-out.
freak out for 2 minutes [seemed like 2 hours] until the wal-mart lady found him playing on the handicapped motorized shopping carts.
i’m sure he thought it was a tractor.
go home and run to the computer to lay down this idea which happened to me in the wal-mart parking lot.
and here it is:

relentless final mix & drums on new tune…
by Rob on Jul.30, 2009, under Kitchen Table, Relentless

listened to the final mix of relentless – it’s ready to go – just going to listen to it again tomorrow with fresh ears to make sure i’m not too tired to hear sump’m.
working on a new tune currently called “Goin’ to Kansas.” i’ve got an intro verse and a chorus happening that i’m pretty happy with – tonite i worked on the drums – i was using live drum loops but it’s getting too difficult to deal with so i decided to go back to clicking midi notes – woo hoo! back forthe between that and on the phone with mark checking out final mix tweaks for relentless – and now it’s way too late:30. so, that’s it for tonite.

July 2009 – Mixing Relentless at Mark’s.
To hear the audio for what we’re talking about here, it’s posted in the widget on the home page. |

I arrived with a ProTools session in one hand and my amp in the other – well – amps.
I had recorded the guitars straight into ProTools and used amp simulators. But for the final mix I wanted real amps. So we setup my amps in a slaved configuration in Mark’s basement. Cascaded 1959 with 2 tubes pulled – into a Weber Mass 150 for load and tap out to a stock 1959 config with 6L6 power tubes. |
|
|
We ran the direct signal guitar which had been captured in earlier sessions from the control room down to the amp room and this is where we use the orange box pictured here to convert the signal into a signal that the amp was happy with. It was totally cool to hear the the tracks that I had been working with using the amp simulator now BLASTING through REAL amps. Of course after getting over the initial blast , I had to juice it just a little more with the EQ you see in the picture – just a slight mid boost – nothing too drastic – just looking for “on the brink of destruction” energy – you know? the amp needs to sound like if you push it any harder, something’s going to blow! This is what you hear on the left side of the mix. |
|
The amp on the right side of the mix – shown here. Hee haw. Yeah that’s right… not an amp. A simulator. Not quite as attractive is it? Nothing like a real life, fire breathing, Marshall. |
|
The all important mic placement. Mark will need to fill in the blanks here [see his comments below by clicking the comments link - push the seatbelt together until you hear a "click"]. What I remember is that the one mic is a ribbon mic – ay? And then we have an SM57 on the other speaker. They were both painstakingly placed into the exact center of the cone – ay?
So, that’s a brief look at the innards of the session. And now… listen to it in the car at top volume! A time honored tradition. |

Welcome…
by Rob on Jul.18, 2009, under Kitchen Table
Welcome! This page is like the GALPIN daily MEGA-tweet.
First of all this site… It’s new. We’re workin’ on it!
Beyond that, this whole solo album idea is totally energizing me. This site was built to give the effort an online presence – for promotional purposes. But I hope to turn it into an experiment in – “what happens if you ‘lose the makeup’ and just show what’s really going on?” I mean – the truth can be stranger than fiction. It may also be a heck of a lot more interesting.
So, I plan to share everything that is going on with the creation of these little CREATURES we are hatching here at the ranch – NO not my kids. These songs! They become little creatures and take on lives of their own as they grow and develop. And grow. Plus develop.
So, stop on by to get the whole truth and nuthin’ but it about what’s going on with the music we’re putting together for this solo effort. And when I say WE, you may be wondering if there’s a mouse in my pocket… hee hee!! Let’s just say – I gots peeples. And my peeples know peeples. And I love me some peeples. And you’ll be hearing all about everybody who gets involved and all the GORY (goary) (hmmm… sp?) details as they emerge!!
Love ya – peace – and ENJOY!
-Rob
