listened to the final mix of relentless – it’s ready to go – just going to listen to it again tomorrow with fresh ears to make sure i’m not too tired to hear sump’m.

working on a new tune currently called “Goin’ to Kansas.” i’ve got an intro verse and a chorus happening that i’m pretty happy with – tonite i worked on the drums – i was using live drum loops but it’s getting too difficult to deal with so i decided to go back to clicking midi notes – woo hoo! back forthe between that and on the phone with mark checking out final mix tweaks for relentless – and now it’s way too late:30. so, that’s it for tonite.

The Relentless Mix Session

by Rob on Jul.29, 2009, under Kitchen Table, Relentless

rel_cont July 2009 – Mixing Relentless at Mark’s.

To hear the audio for what we’re talking about here, it’s posted in the widget on the home page.

Slaved setup - cascade mod 1959 into stock 1959 I arrived with a ProTools session in one hand and my amp in the other – well – amps.

I had recorded the guitars straight into ProTools and used amp simulators. But for the final mix I wanted real amps. So we setup my amps in a slaved configuration in Mark’s basement. Cascaded 1959 with 2 tubes pulled – into a Weber Mass 150 for load and tap out to a stock 1959 config with 6L6 power tubes.

We ran the direct signal guitar which had been captured in earlier sessions from the control room down to the amp room and this is where we use the orange box pictured here to convert the signal into a signal that the amp was happy with. It was totally cool to hear the the tracks that I had been working with using the amp simulator now BLASTING through REAL amps. Of course after getting over the initial blast , I had to juice it just a little more with the EQ you see in the picture – just a slight mid boost – nothing too drastic – just looking for “on the brink of destruction” energy – you know? the amp needs to sound like if you push it any harder, something’s going to blow! This is what you hear on the left side of the mix.
rel_amp2 The amp on the right side of the mix – shown here. Hee haw. Yeah that’s right… not an amp. A simulator. Not quite as attractive is it? Nothing like a real life, fire breathing, Marshall.
rel_mic The all important mic placement. Mark will need to fill in the blanks here [see his comments below by clicking the comments link - push the seatbelt together until you hear a "click"]. What I remember is that the one mic is a ribbon mic – ay? And then we have an SM57 on the other speaker. They were both painstakingly placed into the exact center of the cone – ay?

So, that’s a brief look at the innards of the session.

And now… listen to it in the car at top volume! A time honored tradition.
